Composing a campus-wide email announcement for the Orlando Heart Walk

For this assignment, I collected and compiled information to disseminate in a campus-wide email. This task required several steps: researching details about the upcoming Orlando Heart Walk, evaluating what the audience needed to know, and composing a message that aligned with the university style guide.

Rude and Eaton (2011) describe editors as “information managers” and it was my responsibility to consider what the audience already knew, what they would want to know, and what I was asking them to do. This supports Weber’s (2002) description of a substantive edit: an edit that evaluates whether the information is ordered in a logical way and if all necessary information is included. The goal of the email is to provide the audience – University of Central Florida students and faculty – with a concise understanding of the who, what, where, when, and why of the Orlando Heart Walk.
