Editing the play Ali Baba And The Thieves, written by Debbie Lannen
This artifact represents the collaborative side of editing. My team performed complete edits on two plays, one of which is shown here. This collaboration required the use of multiple technologies. At the beginning of the project, we met via Zoom to set benchmarks and assign roles. We shared files on Microsoft Teams and Google Drive and communicated through Teams and Canvas. The shared file function of Google allowed us to upload comments to the same document, and once we agreed on our edits, the script was converted to a Microsoft Word file for submission. The final deliverable included two Word files per script: a marked-up copy with editor comments and a clean copy in a prescribed template.
The team reviewed the narration and dialogue for improvements including removing extraneous information; cleaning up sentences that were difficult to understand (Kasten, 2008); and removing instances of passive voice, clichés, and adverbs (Culleton). We discussed our recommendations as a group and agreed on which changes to implement in the manuscript. The group overcame the challenges of technology issues and a short timeline to successfully meet the objective of working with other writers.
